Video Summary
The AANN Amplified Virtual Symposium featured presentations by Holly Warsh and Madonna on epilepsy treatment, seizure management, and nursing care. Cindy also reminded attendees to complete evaluations by October 12 to receive two continuing-education credits, nominate colleagues for neuroscience nursing awards by October 31, attend the virtual International Neuroscience Nursing Research Symposium on January 23, 2026, and join the annual conference in Dallas, March 21–24, 2026.

Holly discussed drug-resistant epilepsy, which affects roughly a third of people with epilepsy and can substantially impair quality of life. She reviewed treatment options including brain resection, laser interstitial thermal therapy (LITT), and neuromodulation devices such as VNS, RNS, and deep brain stimulation. Choice of treatment depends on seizure location, surgical candidacy, and potential effects on critical brain functions. Nurses support patients through education, careful postoperative neurological monitoring, complication prevention, mobility, and compassionate care.

Madonna provided an overview of seizure anatomy, classification, causes, assessment, first aid, and emergency treatment. She emphasized documenting how events begin, their duration and progression, responsiveness, and recovery; maintaining safety; and recognizing status epilepticus as a neurological emergency requiring prompt treatment. She also reviewed antiseizure medications, adherence, side effects, drug interactions, and individualized care. Both speakers stressed the importance of informed, nonjudgmental support for people with epilepsy and collaboration among neuroscience professionals.
