Video Summary
Kim Meyer’s webinar explored how artificial intelligence is being used in nursing and the neurosciences. She distinguished rule-based “traditional” AI from generative AI and described everyday applications, including language tools, automation, and self-driving vehicles.

In healthcare, AI may reduce documentation and administrative burdens, support clinical decisions, identify patient deterioration, improve staffing and workflows, and help create patient education materials. Examples included AI-assisted clinical note writing, the investigational CONCERN system for predicting deterioration, robotic support, and neuroimaging tools that flag possible strokes, hemorrhages, and aneurysms. Other emerging applications include tumor analysis, seizure detection, dementia research, and rehabilitation technologies.

Meyer emphasized that AI is a tool—not a substitute for clinical judgment. Systems depend on the quality and diversity of their training data, so bias, privacy breaches, and inaccurate recommendations are important concerns. Clinicians must be able to review and override AI outputs, maintain critical-thinking skills, and follow journal policies when using AI in scientific writing. The webinar encouraged participants to recognize AI already embedded in healthcare and use it thoughtfully, ethically, and with appropriate human oversight.
