Video Summary
Cindy Bautista and Lauren Daniels presented a neuroscience nursing orientation framework developed by an AAN task force. Because the literature offered little guidance and nursing teams face staffing and retention challenges, the group used a Delphi study to establish five essential components and 22 elements: neuroscience foundations, diseases and conditions, nursing skills, specific populations (including older adults and end-of-life care), and transition to practice.

The speakers described ways to deliver the material, including e-learning, skills checklists, simulation, unfolding case studies, journal clubs, and brief microlearning videos. They recommended reviewing existing educational resources for local relevance and using checklists for low-frequency, high-risk skills. Participants also shared ideas such as podcasts, scavenger hunts, games, bedside rounds, and QR-code tracking.

Successful orientation depends on more than curriculum. The presenters emphasized preparing and supporting preceptors, coordinating with charge nurses on assignments and learning needs, prioritizing content based on common admissions, and introducing changes incrementally. Attendees discussed strategies for ongoing engagement, including mentorship, required learning sessions, team-based certification preparation, and education designed around staff preferences. The presenters encouraged participants to share and publish effective practices.
