Video Summary
The webinar focused on neurocritical care nursing challenges through two presentations: multimodal neuromonitoring and a traumatic brain injury (TBI) case study.

Beth Hunt explained how combining measures of intracranial pressure (ICP), brain oxygenation, cerebral blood flow, and metabolism can provide a fuller picture of brain physiology and help detect secondary injury early. She emphasized interpreting waveforms and trends alongside the neurological examination—not treating isolated numbers or using monitoring data alone to predict outcomes. Monitoring options discussed included ventricular and intraparenchymal catheters, pupillometry, near-infrared spectroscopy, and cerebral microdialysis.

Michael Rogers applied TBI care principles to a case study, highlighting assessment of Glasgow Coma Scale components and quantitative pupil responses. Key priorities included preventing secondary injury by avoiding hypoxia and hypotension, maintaining cerebral perfusion, positioning the head midline with the head of bed elevated, and monitoring ventilation, temperature, glucose, and seizures. He reviewed interventions such as hyperosmolar therapy, analgesia and sedation, seizure prophylaxis, and escalation of care when ICP remains elevated.

Both speakers stressed that nursing assessment, clinical context, trend recognition, and collaboration with the interprofessional team remain essential as monitoring technology and analytics expand.
