Pdf Summary
This abbreviated orientation guide is designed for experienced ICU travel nurses with documented general ICU skills. It supplements, but does not replace, the institution’s orientation plan. Hospital orientation (first 1–4 hours): Complete online and HealthStream requirements. The preceptor reviews upcoming assignments and orientation goals; the orientee contacts the CNS with questions. Clinical Day 1: In the ICU, the preceptor leads care while assessing skills and building rapport. The orientee reviews unit routines, safety checks, neuro and general assessments, documentation, medications and pumps, and relevant procedures and equipment. The assignment should be lower acuity, such as one or two patients, with opportunities to admit, transfer, or discharge. The orientee asks questions, reviews policies, and demonstrates skills with guidance. Clinical Day 2: The orientee begins planning and directing care for a moderately complex neuro patient, practicing ventilator and EVD management, medication titration, neuro assessments, procedures, patient transport, mobilization, and family communication. Whenever possible, the same patient is followed across shifts to strengthen clinical reasoning. The preceptor guides decisions, observes care and documentation, and communicates progress. Clinical Day 3: The orientee takes greater responsibility, including giving report, presenting during rounds, interpreting labs, monitoring ICP and hemodynamics, communicating the care plan, and recognizing when to seek help. The preceptor supports decision-making, increases independence in demonstrated skills when appropriate, and reviews documentation and readiness for future assignments. Throughout orientation, the orientee should prepare for patient care, communicate concerns, complete required learning, and discuss strengths and development needs with the preceptor and CNS.
