Video Summary
The session introduced the GBS/CIDP Foundation International and its work supporting people with Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS), chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy (CIDP), and multifocal motor neuropathy (MMN) through education, peer support, research, and advocacy.

Two patients described their journeys. Julie was diagnosed with CIDP after developing mobility problems following childbirth and has received IVIG for more than two decades. Jessica’s symptoms progressed from hand weakness and falls to paralysis; her diagnosis later changed from CIDP to MMN. Both emphasized the importance of compassionate, skilled infusion nurses and the reassurance of connecting with others who understand the conditions. They also described how insurance delays and treatment denials can cause serious anxiety and health setbacks.

The foundation offers educational materials, support groups, webinars, patient navigation, research funding, and help with insurance and other practical needs. A children’s book created by Julie and her daughter helps explain these conditions to young family members.

During discussion, speakers noted that recovery varies, rehabilitation may be lengthy, and ongoing therapy can help manage residual symptoms. Their advice to newly diagnosed patients: they are not alone, progress may be slow, and there is reason to keep moving forward.
