Video Summary
UT Southwestern neuroscience nurse educators described a simulation program designed to help novice neuro nurses perform neurological assessments with greater confidence, comfort, and efficiency. The program was introduced after preceptors reported inconsistent training and difficulty conducting serial exams. During a three-hour session in nurses’ fourth week of clinical orientation, educators demonstrate a systematic assessment, explain neuroanatomy and NIH Stroke Scale steps, and use role-play and case studies with normal, altered, and intubated patients. Participants practice scoring findings and identifying stroke locations in a supportive setting.

Among 34 participants, post-simulation surveys showed improved self-reported confidence, comfort, efficiency, and readiness to escalate concerns. Nurses especially valued seeing assessments demonstrated and explained in person. The simulation is now part of onboarding across the neuroscience service line. Future plans include follow-up assessments, refresher sessions for experienced or float nurses, collaboration with other units, and exploring links to clinical outcomes and preceptor feedback.
